Old gig review: System Of A Down w/Spineshank and Static X, Nottingham Rock City 18th May 1999

Written probably the day after the gig. I was very rude to Spineshank in person, which I regret. I'm sure they're nice guys, but they were not a good band.

System Of A Down w/Spineshank and Static X, 18^th May 1999

We got into Rock City near the end of Static X’s set after queing for ages. They were an average White Zombie-esque metal band, entertaining, but not great. 

Spineshank are still shit. I met the singer at the bar during SOAD’s set and told him to turn the fucking guitars up, because you CAN’T HEAR THEM!!!!!!!!

System Of A Down are in a completely different class to their support. They have the songs, the presence, the stage talk and the general amazingness of a great band. They’re the first band to emerge in a while with a political slant. Singer Serj took the time to made a comment about Nato’s bombing of Serbia (which was happening at the time) and ended the main set with a furious speech about apathy. Their blend of heavy as fuck metal and Dead Kennedys-esque vocal delivery suits me fine. I hope they come back soon.
